How Important is Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses?

Considering we specialise in supporting small businesses with their Social Media Marketing, it’s fair to say that we, at SP5 Digital, think that it’s very beneficial. Whilst the industry is constantly changing (for better or worse), it has consistently provided lots of new opportunities for both individuals and businesses.

Social Media is a free marketing channel. In other words, to get your posts out there, there aren’t any fees. Unlike PPC or Direct Mail, which are both examples of B2B Marketing Ideas for SMEs, that require financial investment. Of course, Social Media Marketing requires time, but I don’t think there is a marketing strategy in the universe that doesn’t require time and/or investment to get started. If there is, I think you’ve just discovered the answer to 99% of business owners’ prayers!

The Importance of Social Media Marketing for Different Industries

To discuss how important Social Media Marketing is for small businesses, we must first explore its relevance in different industries. Why? ‘Small Businesses’ as a term encompasses a wide range of organisations, their similarity simply being their size. A niche professional services business and a local cocktail bar are both small businesses, but their Social Media strategies, and marketing priorities, shouldn’t be the same.

In our experience, we’ve found most Social Media Marketing success with small businesses in the following sectors:

  • Hospitality
  • Health and Beauty
  • Food and Beverage
  • Leisure

These industries tend to have great success on platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok. So, for them, a presence on these platforms is more important.

B2B businesses, on the other hand, tend to find more success on LinkedIn. This is because this is a platform that is home to thought leadership content and users are typically in work mode. On an even more granular level, LinkedIn Ghostwriting tends to be successful on the platform when executed well.

With your specific industry in mind, let’s take this one step further…

How Important is Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses?

What other marketing are you doing for your small business? If you are already successfully doing Email Marketing, have a great SEO-friendly website, and write regular Blogs, then a Social Media strategy might not be essential. But, if you are currently not doing any marketing at all and want to get your name out there at no cost, then Social Media Marketing for your small business might be far more important.

Let’s Talk Social Media Strategy

Regardless of its so-called ‘importance’, if you are currently using Social Media Marketing to promote your small business, it is crucial to have an underlying strategy. Posting content is one thing. Posting relevant and engaging content is another.

Whilst some so-called gurus might recommend posting for the sake of posting, that is not something we recommend here at SP5 Digital. If you’ve already got lots to do, churning out posts that don’t gain much traction isn’t the best use of your time, and also doesn’t create a professional brand image.

Ultimately, the importance of Social Media Marketing depends on several factors. But, if you’ve got the time and/or resources to implement a Social Media strategy, we’d definitely recommend it. Social Media Marketing can help you get your brand name out there, build you a community of loyal, engaged followers, and ultimately increase your sales.

If you would like some support creating and implementing a Social Media Marketing Strategy for your business, we are here to help. With over 5 years of experience in the industry, including both agency-side and in-house, we are here to help. Just get in touch and let’s set up a meeting!
